SAN FRANCISCO (NBC/KNTV) - A solar-powered plane took off Tuesday morning and flew across the San Francisco Bay area.
It's not the first flight for the Solar Impulse, but it is scheduled to be the longest, so far: 16 hours.
The Solar Impulse is powered by 12,000 solar cells and is considered the world's most advanced sun-powered plane.
It has the wingspan of a 747 and weighs about the same as a mid-sized car. It carries only one passenger.
It's creator plans to attempt a cross-country flight starting May 1.
