BATTERSEA, South London (NBC/ITN) - The famous submarine car used in a “James Bond” movie went up for sale.
The Lotus Espirit had never been offered for sale -- stored in a locker since being used in "The Spy Who Loved Me."
"What you have to understand is that it's not a car at all, but it's a fully functional submarine,” said auction representative Don Rose. “And it functions as such in the film -- 12 days of shooting in the Bahamas, including a famous battle scene underwater
It's marketed as being a fully operational submarine and was designed especially for the 1977 movie starring Roger Moore as “Bond.”
"Out of all the ‘Bond’ cars, gadgets and everything that's ever been done in a ‘Bond’ movie, I don't think there was anything more outrageous than a car that transforms itself into a submarine."
Expected to sell for up to $1.5 million, it sold on Monday for $920,000.
