STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - If you are looking for a great place to take your family this spring, why not visit some local gardens? The Trustees of Reservations' Cultural Resources Specialist Mark Wilson came by the studio to tell us more about these beautiful places you and your family can visit.
Naumkeag is a National Historic Landmark
Located in Stockbridge with glorious gardens described as a "playground for the imagination" designed by America's first modern landscape architect, Fletcher Steele, and former owner of the home, Mabel Choate.
The Mission House in Stockbridge
Has some lovely gardens in the back also designed by Fletcher Steele. This Colonial-era house and museum, also National Historic Landmark, tells the story of the Stockbridge Mohicans and missionary John Sergeant.
Ashintully in Tyringham
Surrounded by forested hills, the gardens were designed by composer John S. McLennan, Jr. A stream traversed by two bridges, rambling lawns, a cathedral of deciduous trees, and a central fountain create a soothing harmony. A short trail ascends to the ruins of Ashintully's original mansion, where walkers enjoy fine views of the valley.
