Flannery is a two month old kitten whose siblings have been adopted. He came in with his siblings as an underage kitten, weighing just 10 ounces. In order to be spayed/neutered and made available for adoption, kittens need to be at least 2 months or 2 pounds. Thanks to his foster family, Flannery is now awaiting a new home. No photo available.
Smoots (highlights FIV segment coming up) Smoots came to Dakin as a 5 year old stray. At first glance, you will notice he has a fun and funky haircut! When he came in he was very matted. Once his doo grows in he will once again be a bushy, handsome fellow. In keeping with attention to good dental care for all cats but especially with an FIV+ cat, Smoots had a dental cleaning courtesy of the Buddy Fund (a special fund to assist animals with extraordinary veterinary needs).
Pumpkin Patches - may be a middle aged fellow at 7 years, but he's young at heart and has so much energy! If you're looking for a kitty who is super friendly but has the wisdom that comes with age, well then, he may be your guy! Pumkin Patches came to Dakin all the way from the center of the state via animal control. PP has enjoyed his stay here at Dakin and getting to know and be loved by all of the staff, but he's looking forward to finally finding my family! Do you want a rollie polie lovebug to give you love and purrs for years to come? Then he's purrfect fellow for you! PP is one of our longest residents, having been here six weeks.
Sneakers - A sweet girl who loves to play! Sneakers also loves to soak up the sun in a sunny spot in the window. When Sneakers originally came to Dakin as a stray, she had a broken hind leg. Her leg was repaired and she was adopted. Her broken-hearted family tearfully returned her when they discovered they were allergic. This super love-bug is ready to go home and soak up the sun with her new family.
Mississippi Buddy (dog) 10 year old Beagle mix.
Dakin helps local dogs first…and still has room to help dogs from outside the area. In this case, Dakin was able to help the animal control from Adams, MA. I was microchipped and it was discovered that I originally I came from Mississippi and so that is why my name is Mississippi Buddy. Buddy is a hound mix and that means he loves to have his nose to the ground and learn about my environment. It's like the Doggie News. He enjoys playing with toys still. In his previous home, MB lived with other dogs and children. If you'd like to meet him and maybe go for a walk, just come on down to Dakin and meet this sweet guy!
Larry (Dixie) - 2 year old Rotti mix
A big cuddle bug who loves getting attention, especially pets and massage. Larry can be playful at times, but also calms down nicely too. A Dixie do, Larry came from an overcrowded Southern shelter where chances of adoption were pretty unlikely. Hoping to find an adopter with previous experience. Larry can be nervous meeting some dogs and would do best with a dog who has a calm, laid back, personality. The adoption floor makes him feel a little anxious so he's being kept in another area that is quieter.
Fostering a Pet
Fostering saves lives, hundreds every year. Foster care is a great way for people to partner with Dakin Humane Society and help save the lives of animals in our community.
Foster homes are needed throughout the year to help with animals who need time outside of the kennel/shelter environment. Foster opportunities abound and most especially at this time of year with the influx of kittens.
There are all kinds of foster opportunities available including fostering bottle babies, orphaned kittens, mom with kittens, even adult cats and dogs are in need of temporary care in home situations until they can come back to the adoption center to find permanent homes.
Fostering is a great way for people who want to help who are not able to make a long-term commitment to adoption.
