SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield and State Police are searching for a suspect in the city's 15th homicide of 2010.
Springfield Police Sgt John Delaney told 22News that on Tuesday night just after 7:00, officers found Jose Colon, 17, of Springfield, lying in the middle of baseball diamond #2, shot in the head, chest, and back. Ambulance crews determined Colon was already dead.
Sgt Delaney said that gangs may have been involved in the shooting. Delaney also said that a weapon was found very close to the victim's body, but that police do not believe this was the murder weapon.
The State Police helicopter and search dogs helped comb the area, but no suspects were found, and no arrests have yet been made. According to Delaney, there are sources that are cooperating with police in order to solve the case. He also said that Commissioner William Fitchet has decided to increase patrols in the Van Horn Park area.
