CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The city of Chicopee is considering re-opening St. Patrick'sSchool on Montgomery Street. The 39 year-old building was shut downin June of 2008 because enrollment was down and funds weredwindling.
Currently the building is used for religious classes, bingo andpreparing Meals-On-Wheels. The City of Chicopee is looking atgiving the building a second chance.
Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonnette said they are consideringmoving students from the 110 year-old Belcher Elementary School toSt. Patrick's School. Bissonnette told 22news the move wouldsave the city millions of dollars. The city could buy the schoolfrom the diocese for nearly $2 million instead of constructing anew school which is estimated to cost $12 million.
The city plans to meet with the Springfield Diocese and confirmplans for the property sometime in March.
