STRATFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut police say they arrested a man who reported being shot by gang members, when he actually had wounded himself by accident while riding his bicycle.
Stratford police charged 22-year-old local resident Wendell Docteur on Thursday with making a false statement, unlawful discharge of a firearm and failure to report a lost firearm.
Authorities told the Connecticut Post (http://bit.ly/17o24FS ) that Docteur claimed gang members shot him in the leg during a robbery in May.
Police say there were inconsistencies in Docteur's story, and he later admitted he was riding his bicycle with a gun in his waistband when it fired by accident.
Docteur posted $10,000 bail and will be arraigned Sept. 5 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
Docteur didn't return messages seeking comment. It's not clear if he has a lawyer.
