WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - A gruesome discovery in a wooded area near the West Haven, New Haven border. Police say someone found a charred body along the West River and now they're busy trying to figure out how it got there.
Finding a body is bad enough as it is, but imagine finding a body burned beyond recognition. That's what police told News 8 happened earlier today. Now they have the difficult task of piecing together the who, what, where, when, and why of a mystery that has people in West Haven on edge.
On the border of West Haven and New Haven, tents can be seen from across the West River. It's an area known to attract the homeless. On Wednesday afternoon, the yellow tape went up and the riverside became a crime scene.
"There's a lot of people that live in the woods over there. It's just terrible," said Danny Collins of New Haven. "I guess people are going to go wherever they can. And it's pretty much allowed, so, I don't know. It's horrifying."
Just before 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, West Haven Police got a call about a badly burned body found in the woods off of the Boston Post Road.
Once on scene, detectives combed the area looking for clues as to what may have happened. Fire investigators were also called in to assist in the investigation. A ladder truck was used to take overhead pictures of the scene.
Police stayed at the site throughout the day and into the evening, talking to nearby business owners. Detectives stopped possible witnesses in an attempt to find out anything they can about who was found.
"All I can think of is who was it? A lot of stuff has gone on back there in the woods that no one has an explanation for. Or someone dies, then stories come a long," said Toni Rossi of New Haven.
People familiar with the area say while it's an area known for it's problems. They hope police are able to find some closure to this latest mystery.
"Hopefully they find whoever did it or whatever happened. Bless him. You know, hope everything's fine with their family and everything's alright," said Collins.
Again, police said that body was so badly burned, it could take quite some time before they can make a positive identification. Police say the remains were that of a white male.
