Athol man facing assault, attempted murder charges after alleged home invasion

ATHOL, Mass. (WWLP) - An Athol man is accused of several charges including attempted murder after an alleged home invasion Tuesday night. 

According to Hampshire County District Attorney Spokesperson Mary Carey, Athol Police were called to a home on Lenox Street Tuesday just before midnight for a report of a home invasion. 

Carey said 58-year-old Timothy Murphy is facing the following charges: 

  • Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon
  • Attempted murder
  • Home invasion
  • Vandalizing property
  • Breaking and entering in the nighttime in the attempt to commit a felony

When police arrived at the home they found two victims suffering from cuts to their necks. The victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.

Carey said Murphy is expected to be arraigned in Greenfield District Court Wednesday.

The incident is being investigated by Athol Police and state police assigned to the Northwestern DA's office.
