Chicopee PD: Suspect in business shooting also wanted for Wendell murder

If you see the suspect you are asked to call 911

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Chicopee police say the man suspected of shooting at an employee inside a business early Wednesday morning is also wanted in connection to a deadly shooting in Wendell overnight.

Chicopee Police Officer Mike Wilk told 22News officers were called to Specialized Trucking at 215 Griffith Road around 1:27 a.m. for a report of shots fired. Wilk said 53-year-old Lewis Starkey III walked up to the business and shot at the man sitting behind the glass window. Wilk says the glass window was shot out and its debris hit the employee, who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

"It's a little upsetting to understand that happened about 100 yards from here," Jack Gauthier of Chicopee said.

An employee of Specialized Trucking at 215 Griffith Road who did not want to be identified told 22News Starkey was a current employee. His victim was the night manager.

Starkey's gun malfunctioned, and the injured worker was able to wrestle the weapon away from him, Wilk said. The suspect then drove off.

"I don't know what his intentions were, but if that gun did not malfunction, I absolutely think that he had the capability to do more damage inside of that business than what was done," Wilk said.

People told 22News they worry about violence in the workplace.

"Occasionally. Years ago it was the post office," Richard Sabourn of Chicopee said. "I hate to say that. I also worked for the federal government. I'm retired now but it's distressing."

Woman killed in Wendell shooting

An hour earlier, Wilk says Starkey was involved in the deadly shooting in Wendell, where a 48-year-old woman was shot and killed.

Officer Wilk told 22News Starkey's gun was registered. All this as the manhunt continues.

He is on the run and may be driving a red 2013 Lincoln MKX with Vermont license plates QLTMKR.

Starkey is wanted for murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. If you see him or have any information, you are asked to call 911 immediately. Do not approach the man.
