SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher? Would you know how to use one if a fire started in your home or workplace? If not, the Springfield Fire Department now has a high-tech tool that allows you to practice without the danger of an actual fire.
Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant unveiled the department's new BullsEye digital fire extinguisher training tool on Wednesday morning. The system consists of a digital screen that simulates a fire, and an electronic fire extinguisher that looks and feels just like a real one. It will be used to train firefighters and members of the public as well.
The department has been trying to get this tool for years, which is much safer than the previous method of training firefighters with a real fire and extinguisher. Firefighters were able to raise the money for it through a $5,000 donation from MassMutual, as well as donations from other companies.
The new tool is available to any interest business or community group in the city.
