SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Memorial Bridge has been reopened after a fire on a garbage truck at the end of the bridge shut down traffic for less than 2 hours.
The truck caught fire on the eastbound lane of the bridge on the Springfield side around 3:00 P.M.
The fire sent heavy smoke into the air, but firefighters were able to get the fire quickly under control.
Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that the fire was caused by an electrical or mechanical problem. According to Leger, the driver of the truck said that he was coming back from the dump when all of the lights on the dashboard went on, and he began to smell smoke. He and his passenger got out uninjured.
The truck was towed away.
