LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - The trial of a Lowell man charged with beating his wife to death with a rubber mallet has started with a police officer describing the bloody scene.
The Ngoc Tran is facing a murder charge in connection with the April 2011 death of Son Tran.
The prosecutor said in opening statements Tuesday that the 63-year-old man was controlling and abusive to his wife of 30 years, and had just learned she planned to leave him. The prosecutor said he stuffed toilet paper in wife's mouth to stifle her screams as he beat her.
His defense attorney described him as stressed out over financial pressures.
The Sun reports responding Officer Phillip Valliant testified he saw the 60-year-old victim on the bathroom floor covered in blood. She suffered face and skull fractures.
