SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Police in Springfield have arrested a man for murder, just hours after the victim was stabbed to death.
Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that around 4:30 A.M. police were called to 51 Jefferson Avenue, for a report of a disturbance there.
In the backyard, police found 38 year-old Sadeeq Khalid Allah (also known as Shundell Gasque) of Springfield, who had been stabbed under the arm. Police performed first aid until an ambulance arrived, and Allah was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he died within about half an hour's time.
Shortly after the victim died, Delaney says that police questioned a second man who checked himself into the hospital, Edwin Santiago, 29, of Springfield. Santiago was suffering from a wound to the head. After questioning, he became the focus of their investigation, and after hours of gathering evidence, Santiago was arrested for murder.
Delaney says that Allah is the city's ninth homicide victim this year. At this time, Delaney says it is believed that the killing came as the result of a dispute over drugs. He said that the victim and the suspect knew each other.
