Some news outlets have reported Hernandez may have had ties to a gang. While it's only speculation, AIC psycologist Gregory Schmutte says that the committment to gangs and groups of people is typically very strong, and would cause someone to do something others wouldn't.
However, he also says there's a lot we don't know about Hernandez that could offer insight into his alleged actions.
"Here's a guy who seems to have it all going for him, signed a great, lucrative contract, he's famous, he's doing well athletically, he's got money. You wonder why someone might get involved, allegedly, in this sort of thing," Schmutte said.
"I think you could speculate that a person's roots prior to having that money and that success have a lot to do with who they are and how they behave; perhaps more so than the recent success that they've experienced."
Amid these allegations, the Patriots cut the tight end from the team this week. It's unclear now what will happen to the bonus he got when he signed with the team.
