SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield police have made an arrest following dozens of car break-ins in the city's McKnight neighborhood.
Carlos Vergara, 32, of Springfield was arrested over the weekend on charges of receiving stolen property and possession of burglarious instruments. Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News police believe Vergara is responsible for the recent break-ins.
According to Delaney, there have been more than 35 car break-ins in the last 30 days in the area of Worthington, Magazine, Florida, and Armory Streets. Police have been working to find who is responsible, and early Saturday morning they spotted Vergara (who had been indicted 15 previous times on breaking and entering and larceny charges) walking Worthington Street, carrying a pink shopping bag.
Inside the bag, police found items that had been stolen from a car, including a car stereo. Delaney says Vergara was also carrying a flashlight and tools used to break into cars.
Vergara will be arraigned Monday in Springfield District Court.
