FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) - Police have a man in custody accused of robbing a Fall River gas station and leaving what he claimed to be an bomb on the scene.
The suspect entered the Hess gas station at about 5 p.m. Monday and told the clerk he had an explosive device and demanded cash.
Fall River and Rhode Island State Police were called to the scene and the area surrounding the store was shut down. A bomb squad carefully examined the so-called bomb before determining it was a fake.
"We rendered safe, what we found. We found no explosive," said Sgt. Jerry Galizio of the Mass. Bomb Squad. "There were some other components with the device. The Fall River PD is following up."
The man taken into custody has not yet been identified, but police said he's been charged with armed robbery and possession of a hoax device. He's currently being held on $10,000 bail.
