SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - For the first time ever, a soft drink company is has joined a campaign to fight obesity.
Beverage company Coca-Cola debuted a two-minute commercial Monday night on cable news. The ad encouraged people to be mindful of their calories.
Coca-Cola also pointed out its record of providing drinks with fewer calories, and noted that weight gain is not the result of consuming soda, but other food and beverages.
In recent years, the soft drink industry has come under heavy criticism amid concerns about the obesity epidemic. Soda machines have been removed from thousands of U.S. schools, and cities like New York have tried to restrict sales of large sodas.
Coca-Cola said that the idea behind its new ad is to raise awareness about the healthier options it offers customers. Another ad is expected to run later this week in the run-up to the Super Bowl.
