WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Westfield State University President Evan Dobelle is not sitting quietly as accusations are made about him.
He made a video to publicly deny any wrongdoing.
"It is something that causes me great disappointment and does hurt," Evan Dobelle said in the video released by the Regan Communications group.
Dobelle recorded this video in response to the accusations made about him and his so-called lavish spending on the school's dime.
In the video he insists he's always been honest about his spending:
"I self-reported, told the truth to my chairman and my media counsel right away. They said it was alright, no laws violated, so for this to come back years later anonymously through documents and have this great investigation with sensationalized headlines I find extremely troubling."
The 22News I-Team showed Westfield residents the video who have been following the controversy for weeks now.
"It almost seemed insincere just an after the fact, looked like he was trying to do something that was ok," said Westfield's Charlie Smith.
Dobelle is accused of spending a lot of university money on airfare, restaurants and other personal travel expenses, but he says in this video after having surgery a number of years ago, he doesn't even like to fly.
"Travel to me is going to Boston, going to San Francisco, Silicon Valley where all the powerful foundations are and sometimes traveling with my athletic teams, getting on airplanes is not my thing."
Dobelle says in the video he looks forward to continuing his work at Westfield although some residents think the investigation is far from over.
"I think he's extremely confident of himself. I really do think he doesn't think this will go farther but I think it is going to go farther," added Westfield's Marjorie Burke.
