WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The owner of Coggin Creek Stables in Westfield told 22News her nine dogs died last Thursday because of a broken air conditioner.
Brenda Coggin said all of her breeding and show dogs were killed when the air conditioning unit in their kennel malfunctioned.
"They were in the kennel with the air conditioning on and they were perfectly fine at 10:30 in the morning, and when I went in later in the afternoon, the air conditioner had tripped its reset button and they were all dead," Coggin said.
She told 22News that she buried the dogs that night, and didn't call the police because she didn't think there was anything they could do.
The 22News I-Team found out about the incident Wednesday morning when a viewer e-mailed us requesting that we investigate. We called the MSPCA , who said they hadn't heard about it until we called.
Rob Halpin told 22News the MSPCA's law enforcement department and the Westfield Animal Control officer are now looking into this to find out what happened, and if any animal cruelty laws have been broken.
