Police trying to rescue bear from tree on John Street in Holyoke

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Holyoke and Environmental Police asked residents to stay away from the John Street area while they wrangled a 200 lbs bear that was in a tree.

Lieutenant Jim Albert told 22News Holyoke and Environmental police officers safely managed a black bear which wandered onto 37 John Street Monday night.

Lt. Albert said the bear was behind a tree at the location while officers controlled the downtown area as best as they could to protect both the bear and the public.

This was not too far away from the Holyoke City Hall.

Lt Albert said it was a young bear, and it was obviously stressed.

No further details were available.
