Restaurant business in Amherst on the decline

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - In Amherst, four restaurants have closed just a few months apart from each other. The restaurant industry in Amherst must cater to people like a well-balanced meal.

David Henion, owner of Henion Bakery told 22News, "We've cultivated a clientele mostly of people who live in town."

During the school year, people who live in Amherst only make up a quarter of the plate. The other portion goes to students, many of whom don't need to sacrifice quality for convenience.

"I mainly eat on campus. I don't eat off campus alot. The food here everyday is like top tier" said, Kaliju Jake Nekvasil, Sophomore at UMass Amherst.

For local businesses, keeping up with college students could be a challenge. They often have to compete with the UMASS dining hall, which is voted number one in the country.

"It's just easier to go to the dining halls here" said, Nekvasil.

David Henion is the owner of Henion Bakery, right next to Chez Albert, which is shutting down the kitchen next month, it's the fourth eatery to do so in just a few months. "Perhaps the biggest implement or impediment to shopping in Amherst I believe is the parking situation" said, Henion.

Kayla Kowalczyk, Sophomore at UMass Amherst told 22News, "Where you park your car on campus it's kind of more of a walk there than to actually go to a dining hall."

A meal plan at UMass is pricey. It costs more than $2,500 a semester for the most basic plan, but, that's the price for convenience.
