"It's a privilege." Local runners describe participating in 122nd Boston Marathon

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - For Joseph Owens, the Boston Marathon is more than just a race; it's a 26.2-mile journey of hope, strength, and resilience.

Owens lost his leg while serving in the military 5-years ago, and has been dreaming about crossing the finish line in Boston ever since. "Ever since I got hurt, I've wanted to do the Boston marathon. If I was not running the Boston Marathon I would be in bed wondering, so I have to do it," he said.

Owens turned his dream into a reality Monday. He boarded a bus with the Greater Springfield Harriers, and made the trip from West Springfield  to Hopkinton for the 122nd Boston Marathon.

Many of the runners have spent months preparing for Monday's race, but that doesn't necessarily mean they were prepared for the weather that came along with it.

Peter Fratini of Westfield told 22News, he has run in various marathons over the years, but has never had to run 26.2 miles in cold rain and high winds.. "I've run about 15 marathons now, this is my 5th Boston, and I've never had to deal with this weather before."

The weather may have been a burden, but David Abbott of West Springfield told 22News, mother nature won't stop them from racing towards the finish line, and more importantly, their goals. "Just to be part of it with 33-thousand other runners, it's a priviledge."
