PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A 17 year-old soccer player from eastern Massachusetts is still being held on $100,000 cash bail for his alleged role in the sexual assault of three younger players at a camp in Berkshire County.
Galileo Mondol of Somerville was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on Tuesday morning. Mondol and two 16 year-old teammates from Somerville High School are accused of assaulting one freshman soccer player with a broomstick, and attempting to assault two others.
The alleged attack happened on August 25 inside the freshman cabin at Camp Lenox in Otis. Somerville High School was holding a team-building retreat for their football and soccer teams at the camp.
Mondol faces the following charges:
- One count of aggravated rape of a child under 16
- Two counts of assault with intent to rape a child under 16
- One count of indecent assault and battery on a person who has attained 14 years of age
- Three counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon
- Three counts of intimidation of a witness or another person.
During Mondol’s arraignment on Tuesday, the defense had asked for a lowered bail of $7,500 to $10,000, but was denied. He will be in court for another hearing on Friday to determine whether he is dangerous.
Mondol’s defense attorney, William Korman, says that the two other boys accused in the assault (whose names are not being released due to their age) are responsible; not Mondol. Korman says that even one of the alleged victims says that Mondol was doing everything he could to stop the attack.
"According to the victim's statement, my client was in the cabin and did everything he could to dissuade the other boys from assaulting him. That's certainly not someone who warrants a $100.00 bail and a charge of aggravated rape," Korman said.

The other two defendants were also scheduled for arraignment Tuesday.
Mondol will be back in court on September 6. In the meantime, he is being held at the Berkshire County House of Correction in Pittsfield.
