OTIS, Mass. (WWLP) - Some students in the Berkshire County town of Otis are now connecting to the internet and using new technology. That's because they now have access to broadband technology.
Governor Deval Patrick and Congressman Richard Neal joined the students at Farmington River Elementary School to light the first segment of the new 1200 mile Mass Broadband 123 network .
As part of the network's launch, the students connected via Skype with a classroom of students in Colombia; which is just a fraction of what's to come.
"In the future, they'll be able to do research on the Internet in a way that schools in more populated areas have been able to do for years," said Pamela Goldberg of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. "And so they're being brought into this millennium in a very powerful way."
The remaining segments of the broadband will light over the next few months.
