BOSTON, Mass (WWLP) - Some of the nations top criminal defense lawyers will be representing Boston Marathon Bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Federal Court.
The 19-year-old faces charges that could carry a death sentence, but some residents of Franklin County are not so sure the death penalty would be appropriate.
A top notch defense attorney, from San Diego, California, will be defending Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. She will not only be trying to prove his innocence but also trying to take the death penalty off the table.
Judy Clarke is no stranger to the courtroom or high profile cases. She represented clients such as Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, and Eric Loughner, the Tucson Arizona Shooter.
She was successful in getting those men, life sentences instead, and some residents feel this case should be the same.
"I mean I want justice to be served. What happened is horrific and someone needs to be held responsible. But I don't think the death penalty is justifiable, just because killing someone is wrong no matter what the situation is, said Nick from Shelburne Falls.
Marcia Power of Montague said, "Well it's tempting to say that he should get the death penalty, because of all the destruction and the terror that he caused, but there's always that slight chance that he might not be guilty."
Tsarnaev is charged with using a weapon of mass destruction in the Boston Marathon Bombing. Three people were killed and more than 260 were wounded.
Judy Clarke was appointed to this case late Monday, but she has a reputation for saving clients from the death penalty. There is no word yet on when Tsarnaev's trial will start.
