GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Police blocked-off streets near Greenfield High School for hours, following a gas leak there Tuesday morning.
Firefighters and Berkshire Gas company crews were called to the area before 8:00 A.M., and worked for hours to contain the leak.
Robert Yount, a construction worker at the site, told 22News that they were working when the claw of an excavator hit a gas line, sending a stream of gas up into the sky.

Firefighters had been pouring water onto the broken four-inch pipe to prevent it from sparking.
The construction workers were evacuated from the site, but nearby residents had not been told to leave their homes. Police closed nearby streets to car traffic for nearly three hours, but they began re-opening the roadways just before 11:00 A.M.
Some fire and gas company crews remained in the area after noontime just to make sure everything was safe.
