WHATLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - A 94 year old woman and her 64 year old daughter are dead following a house fire on 6 State Road in Whately.
Deputy Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Gary Stone told 22News the women were pulled from the burning home after getting trapped inside, but efforts to save their lives didn't work.
Firefighters found one of the women on the staircase, and another trapped in bed.
The fire started at around 11:30PM Wednesday.
22News got there to see the home engulfed in thick smoke and flames.
The exact cause of the fire is not known, but Deputy Chief Stone told 22News it may have been caused by a wood stove in a back room of the home.
The mother and daughter, identified as Mary and Sonia Golonka were the only two people who lived in the home.
The fire destroyed the house, as well as a shed.
The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
