ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) - A man was killed and a woman was taken to the hospital, after state troopers fired at a suspect during a drug investigation at his Orange home Wednesday morning.
David Procopio of State Police Media Relations notified 22News that the man, a 23 year old, had been shot and killed during the incident at the second-floor apartment of 18 Mechanic Street.
According to Procopio, around 5:00 A.M., members of the State Police STOP Team were executing a search warrant in connection with a drug investigation, when the suspect (a target of the investigation) confronted the troopers with a gun. Police returned fire, hitting the suspect. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
A 25 year-old woman inside the apartment, who Procopio says was also a target of the investigation, received an injury to her eye, and was taken to the hospital, but has since been released.
The names of both the 23 year-old man and the 25 year-old woman have not been released, but Procopio did say that they were both residents of the apartment.
According to Procopio, the investigation involved the alleged sale of oxycodone and Percoset, and police were made aware that the man had access to guns and may use them, which is why the STOP Team was called-in in the first place.
A search of the apartment turned-up a second gun inside the room where the suspect had confronted police.
The Northwestern District Attorney's Office is now investigating the incident to determine whether the use of deadly force was appropriate in this case.
