GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A former Athol resident could face up to life in prison for raping a seven year-old foster child who was living at his family home.
Mary Carey of the Northwestern District Attorney's Office notified 22News that on Wednesday, a Franklin Superior Court jury found Joshua Matthews guilty of two counts of forcible rape of a child.
Prosecutors say the 22 year-old Matthews, who most recently lived in Keene, New Hampshire, had abused the boy over the course of more than two years.
The victim, who is now 14 years old, had testified against Matthews. Assistant District Attorney Carrie Russell, who prosecuted the case, credited the victim with bringing his abuser to justice.
"It is solely because of this child's strength and resilience that we are able to bring this case to court and ultimately secure a conviction," Russell said.
Matthews will be sentenced on Friday at Franklin Superior Court in Greenfield.
