WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A classic example of why you don't drive through the water over a roadway. Westfield firefighters had to make a water rescue on Route 20 near the Tekoa Country Club Sunday afternoon.
Westfield Fire Captain Paul Lentini told 22News that a husband and wife were told to evacuate. They left their house in two cars. The husband made it across a water-covered stretch of Route 20, but the woman's car stalled.
Water was up to the windows and she had her cat with her. Firefighters waded out and retrieved the woman and her cat. They're both okay.
They'll go back for the car after water recedes.
If you're travling into or through Westfield, especially along Route 20, be ready for several road closures and detours.
We expect conditions to be much better by this time on Monday. In the meantime, respect the river, and keep a safe distance.
