SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Vintage cars will not be zooming through the streets of Downtown Springfield this July, as the 2011 Vintage Grand Prix has been called off.
Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno announced Monday that after meeting with his top department heads as well as organizers for the event, it was decided that there just was not enough time to get downtown prepared for racing by late July.
Further, Governor Deval Patrick has yet to sign a bill that would have allowed street racing in Springfield for the event.
"We'd rather do this first class," Sarno said. "Peter Roberts from the national (Sports Car Club of America) understands this was a monumental task when they brought this to us months ago."
"It has to run its course. We ran out of time and the Mayor's right, we've got to be sure it's pulled off right," Grand Prix organizer Michael Hall of Springfield said.
Sarno says that the Vintage Grand Prix will be held in Springfield next year.
