WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The State Department of Health ordered three western Massachusetts compounding pharmacies to stop producing steroids for the time being.
- The Western Massachusetts Compounding Center in West Springfield.
- Baystate Home Infusion in Springfield.
- The Lenox Village Pharmacy in Lenox.
These three pharmacies are only "partially" shut down.
Besides the total 11 cease-and-desist orders issued to pharmacies in the state, 21 other pharmacies were cited for minor deficiencies--but they have been either corrected or are currently being addressed.
The state's unannounced visits to these compounding pharmacies resulted from the deadly fungal meningitis outbreak traced to contaminated steroids made at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham. More than 600 people have been sickened by the meningitis outbreak around the country; 45 people died.
The New England Compounding Center in Framingham has since been closed.
No word on when the three pharmacies here in western Massachusetts. will be able to resume producing steroids.
