SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Firefighters had to rescue a four-year old boy who fell down an eight to ten-foot hole in downtown Springfield Thursday afternoon.
Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that around 1:00, the boy had been jumping on a metal grated window well on the Byers Street side of the building at 310 State Street. The grate gave way, causing the boy to fall.
Leger said that the boy suffered an arm injury on the way down, though it's unclear whether he had hit it on the grate. The child's grandfather had then jumped into the hole after he fell, so that he could wrap his shirt around the boy's wound to stop the bleeding.
Firefighters put a ladder down to get the boy out of the hole. He was brought to the hospital by ambulance, but is expected to recover.
