SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield-based group Citizens Against Casino Gaming wants the city to conduct a study about the health impact of a casino.
The group cites statistics from the National Council on Problem Gambling that show problem gamblers have more prone to depression, mania, use of alcohol and drugs, and personality disorders.
Dr. Mark Mullan, a member of the group, told 22News that although he doesn't want to see a casino anywhere in western Massachusetts, Springfield should be off the table.
"It is clear that densely-populated lower socio-economic kind of locations as again, I think Springfield qualifies, the risk of all these problems does increase," Mullan said.
He told 22News that he hopes the city will develop a plan to combat these health issues if it's chosen for the sole western Massachusetts casino license.
