HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - A Southampton author continued her 20 year mission Saturday to dispel myths about a controversial breed of dog.
Hundreds of people turned up to Barnes and Noble in Holyoke to meet Jolene Mercadante, the author of "The Angel On My Shoulder."
Mercadante told 22News the book is part of a larger effort to educate the public about what she calls the truth about pit bulls. Often portrayed as vicious by nature, Mercadante and other pit bull advocates argue that's not true.
To drive the point home, they brought along Cherry Garcia, a pit bull that was rescued from Michael Vick's dogfighting ring and taken in by an anonymous New England couple.
"They're human angels. They asked if they could come and support the cause. And I'm actually more excited he's here because people need to see him and understand that after what he's been through, he still loves people," said Mercadante.
Mercadante says thousands of pit bulls are euthanized every year because of misconceptions about the breed's behavior.
