SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - On Monday morning the alarm clocks will be ringing, the lunches will be packed, and some brand new school supplies will be put to use. It's the first day of school in Springfield and some neighboring cities and town as well.
Rather than dreading that first day of school, thousands of Springfield students and their families celebrated the new academic year at Blunt Park Saturday afternoon.
"I'm looking forward to learning my new teachers. I like math, I get to learn multiplication, dividing," said Memphis Scibelli of Springfield.
One of the most important parts of the school year is homework. The first five thousand students to arrive were given backpacks to carry all that homework.
The back-to-school celebration provided much information and resources to parents and guardians, as a way to promote their involvement in their student's success.
"You want to keep on top of your kids and grandchildren. Make sure they're taking the right path. You want to take advantage of all the health information, tutoring if your child needs it," said Grandmother Linda Scibelli.
"It's very important. I'm always trying to learn more about the school system, trying to guide my kids. They have a lot of good information here and I didn't know about that but that's a good thing. Good things for the parents, good things for the kids," said Lesly Ramirez.
"You want your kids to learn and behave and it starts really with the parents. Just getting involved helps them think they can get involved because parents are getting involved," said Stephanie Pingree.
Families also enjoyed music and lunch off the grill; perhaps the last barbecue food of the season before it's back to brown bagged and traditional meals in the school cafeteria.
