AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - The Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner, and as many people get ready to kick off summer. The National Safe Boating Council is launching its week long campaign for safe boating.
In 2011, 758 in the United States died in boating accidents.
In about two thirds of those incidents, victims were not wearing life jackets.
These statistics come from the National Safe Boating Council, and that is why this year's safe boating campaign is focused on getting everyone to wear life jackets.
That applies to people going kayaking or canoeing as well.
It's also important to check your boat to make sure everything works properly before you go out on the water.
The US Coast Guard offers a checklist online.
They also provide these checks free of charge.
It's called vessel safety check.
To find an examiner near you, go to our website wwlp.com.
There we have additional boating safety resources as well.
