HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Two-year-old Elijah Santos spent the first two years of his life in a Boston hospital, but he finally came home on Tuesday.
Elijah was born prematurely and couldn't breathe on his own. He was sent to Franciscan Hospital for Children in Boston where he spent the first two years of his life, hooked up to an oxygen machine.
He is finally well enough to be home now, with full-time nurse care.
His parents told 22News, his doctors had never seen a case like this before.
"It was really difficult when he was born," Elijah's mother Keri Padua said. "We weren't sure what exactly happened, why he was born this way."
His father Danny Santos said, "It's been tough, traveling back and forth to Boston every weekend to see the baby. It's been real tough on us, so to finally have him home is a blessing."
Elijah will continue to have around the clock care at home while he recovers.
