AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - An attorney for the woman who was shot in the jaw by an Agawam police officer's bullet says she will need more surgeries to repair the damage.
Britteney Miles has been released from Baystate Medical Center , where she underwent emergency surgery following the shooting on May 5.
Agawam Police Lt. Richard Light told 22News that Officer Danielle Petrangelo 's gun went off when the officers were called to a breaking-and-entering complaint at the Elizabeth Manor Apartments on Maple Street.
The bullet struck Miles and shattered her jaw, says her attorney, Frank Flannery. While Miles is now out of the hospital, Flannery says she will need "numerous additional surgeries" to repair the damage.
Flannery says that his client and her family would like privacy as the investigation into the shooting continues.
"The nature of her injuries make it difficult for Ms. Miles to communicate, but she intends to cooperate fully with the District Attorney's investigation, after which she will issue a statement to the media so that she may address a number of apparent misconceptions about the incident," Flannery wrote in a news release sent to 22News.
Petrangelo, an 11-year veteran of the Agawam police, and another responding officer, Thomas Forgues, have been put on administrative leave following the incident.
