SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A man who Springfield police say ran away to Ohio to avoid a warrant for murder was back in a western Massachusetts courtroom Wednesday.
Chase Johnson, 29, of Springfield, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Springfield District Court Thursday. He was ordered held without bail.
Johnson was arrested last week by police outside Dayton, Ohio, and was just returned to western Massachusetts.
Johnson is being charged with murder for the July 18 killing of Eddiz Walker of Holyoke. Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney says that Walker was shot in an incident behind the Duck’s Place bar on State Street. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center, but later died.
Walker’s killing was the 12th homicide in Springfield in 2013. There have been four additional homicides in the city since then.
Johnson is due back in court on November 8.
