CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Now that Penn National Gaming has been cut loose from Springfield , people are wondering what they will do next. One potential new location for the gaming company is just up the road in Chicopee.
Mayor Michael Bissonnette told 22News he was on a conference call Wednesday pertaining to possible casino developments.
He says developers are interested in the Cabotville Mill Complex in downtown Chicopee by the waterfront. Bissonnette would not, however, be specific about which developers are showing an interest in a Chicopee site.
The Mayor says they are well-known, and are in the position to pursue a proposal.
"There are three developers in various stages of reviewing their options, shall we say. They have all paid their entry fee to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission , so whether they decide to pursue a Chicopee site or look at some other alternatives; I think we'll know that with some certainty in the next week," Bissonnette said.
"They all have the resources to make something happen. Whether they want to make that happen in Chicopee, I'm certainly interested in having further conversations, but I want to see a real plan not just speculation."
As for Penn National, they paid the non-refundable application fee, so they are still eligible to pursue a casino site anywhere in Massachusetts.
22News spoke with Eric Shippers of Penn National on Tuesday to see if they have interest in other properties. Shippers said that they need to regroup before making any major decisions.
