PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) - If Palmer is chosen to host the western Massachusetts casino, the site will be home to more than just a gambling resort.
Northeast Realty Associates , which owns the Mohegan Sun Palmer site, announced plans Monday to develop a 130 acre site right next to the 152 acres set aside for the proposed casino Mohegan Sun wants to build and operate in Palmer.
Calling it " The Gateway to Western Massachusetts," they hope to build a hotel, a restaurant and retail space, right off the Mass Pike at exit 8.
Springfield Attorney Stephen Spelman, who represents Northeast Realty Associates, told 22News the proposal has outside financial support. "The development we announced today shows that people and lenders, banks, have confidence in palmer and confidence in the Mohegan Sun and Northeast Realty proposal for this casino."
At their Monday night meeting, the Palmer Planning Board unanimously approved a zoning variance so that a parcel of Northeast Realty's property near the pike could be used for commercial purposes.
