AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - If you live in Agawam, you may have heard an explosion on Saturday.
Agawam Police Lt. Edward McGovern told 22News it was a controlled detonation of hazardous materials in a safe undisclosed area on the Southwest side of town.
Agawam Fire Lt. Ken Sagendorph told 22News the state police bomb squad helped them safely explode Petroleum Ether and Picric Acid, both of which are highly combustible.
Lt. Sagendorph told 22News the chemicals were turned in by a resident during the town DPW's hazardous waste collection day.
The chemicals are currently illegal to own, but years ago they were legal.
22News has been getting calls from residents who reported that their house shook during the explosion.
Lt. Sagendorph told 22News there's no policy for notifying residents when one of these controlled explosions takes place.
