LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) - An 85 year old Ludlow woman died Wednesday morning after she was struck by an SUV operated by an elderly Ludlow man who'll face criminal charges, police say.
The woman was hit by a 2010 Nissan Rogue on Highland Avenue between East and Birch Streets at about 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to Ludlow Police Sgt. Daniel Vanadas.
Ludlow Police Sgt. Louis Tulik told 22News the vehicle hit a parked car, went up on the sidewalk, hit the woman and then ran into a utility pole. The 80 year old driver was taken to the Baystate Medical Center Trauma Center for treatment for minor injuries.
Sgt. Vanadas told 22News, "There will be a criminal complaint filed against the driver. The district attorney will decide what charges should be brought."
Sgt Vanadas said that the accident happened within walking distance of the victim's home. Police are withholding her identity pending confirmation of full family notification. Police haven't released the driver's name because he hasn't been charged with any crimes yet.
Neighbor John Kerichenko, who knew the victim, told 22News that he is heartbroken over what happened.
“I found out it was her, I was just devastated. I still am. I don't know what I'm going to do, she was the most pleasant woman. She was the nicest woman you ever met, she was the rock of the family,” Kerichenko said.
The first Ludlow Police officers to respond to the accident report administered emergency first aid, according to a News Release from the Ludlow Police Department. The release goes on to say that Ludlow Fire Department Paramedics "arrived and rendered advanced life support treatment to a severely injured victim...She later died from her injuries at Baystate."
The accident closed both directions of Highland Street for several hours Wednesday while the State police Accident Reconstruction Unit investigated the caused. The Hampden County District Attorney's Office has been notified.
