WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's being called one of the largest consumer electronic launches ever: the iPhone 5 was released in stores on Friday morning.
This new release is being called a "cultural phenomenon."
Customers in West Springfield had been sitting outside the AT&T store on Riverdale Street overnight, waiting to get their hands on the iPhone 5.
Last week, Apple took two million pre-orders for the phone in the first 24 hours it was available. That's more than twice the number for the iPhone 4S when that phone launched a year ago.
Some experts think Apple could sell more than 10 million by Monday. An initial shipping date for Friday was quickly pushed back, so those who plan to pre-order their phone now, or have already put in for it, could be waiting more than three weeks for their phones to ship.
The iPhone 5 officially launched at 8:00 A.M. and is now available.
