CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The air traffic control tower at Barnes Municipal Airport will not shut down. But 149 others across the country will close as a result of federal cuts.
It will be business as usual for the Barnes Airport Tower in Westfield. Barnes is one of 24 federal contract towers that the FAA will keep open to avoid a negative impact on national interests.
149 federal contract towers will close beginning April 7th as part of the FAA sequestration plan.
Barnes had previously been one of the FAA proposed shut down.
The Barnes tower is needed for national security because it is used by the 104th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard, which maintains combat-ready F-15 fighter jets.
