SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield firefighters put out a fire at a large, vacant apartment building on Locust Street.
Firefighters were called to the four-story U-Shaped building at 258 Locust Street around 4:00 Tuesday afternoon.
The heaviest smoke has been coming from the building's fourth story and roof, but at one point, smoke from the fire could be seen from Interstate 91 in the South End.
The building is one of several large brick buildings on the street, some of which are occupied while others are vacant.
Dennis Leger, Aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that 258 Locust has been vacant for the last year and a half, and had been shut down due to code violations.
There is no word at this time on what caused the fire.
