SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The widespread flu is also taking a toll on our wallets.
A new study says one out of three Americans will spend between $250 and $1000 while recovering from the flu.
That includes hospital bills, toiletries and medications.
The study also says an average American loses $92 a year in wages due to the flu.
It's a costly illness for many Western Mass. residents who live on a budget.
"A lot of medical insurances, they don't pay for a lot of things," said Pauline Plamondon of West Springfield. "So you have a lot of co-pays and a lot of additional expenses. The only thing I can say is just try to stay healthy."
No one can avoid the flu entirely, but by washing your hands and sanitizing, people can reduce their chances of getting sick by 80%.
