HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Flu season is here, but there are ways you can protect yourself against the virus.
If you are a veteran or your family member is a veteran, you have just two more hours to take advantage of the Soldier's Home flu shot clinic going until 2:00PM Wednesday.
Along with open house tours, and cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, the Soldier's home is giving flu shots and tips to stay healthy this flu season.
Registered Nurse Stephanie Wallis explained to 22News that getting your flu shot is especially important if you spend a lot of time in highly populated areas, like in dormitories, schools, or retirement homes.
"Because of that your more likely to spread disease, and so therefore anyone that's in close proximity, we do like to encourage them to get their flu shot," said Wallis.
The Center for Disease Control reports that each flu season there are several different strains of the virus that circulate, and the vaccines are made to target three of those most common strains, but during the government shutdown, the CDC is not funded to track any flu outbreaks.
If you do make your way to the Soldier's Home in Holyoke, be sure you bring your insurance card.
Some insurances cover the cost, but for others it will cost you about $30.
